FLEX FX2271-Z 24V Brushless Reciprocating Saw (Tool Only) review

The FX2271-Z is the tool-only version of FLEX’s full-size 24V brushless reciprocating saw. Its model-matched manual specifies a 1-1/4-inch stroke, 0–3,000 SPM, selectable straight/orbital action, pivoting three-position shoe, tool-less blade clamp, LED and two-hand use. FLEX lists 7.4 lb without battery; the -Z page lists two blades but no battery, charger or bag.

A useful fit for

A FLEX 24V owner seeking a full-size two-handed saw with a 1-1/4-inch stroke, selectable straight/orbital motion, three-position sliding shoe and keyless blade eject can compare the FX2271-Z.

The main tradeoff

The 7.4 lb figure is saw-only without battery, not ready-to-cut weight. The orbital mode must not be used on metal and the selector is adjusted only after the motor stops, with the battery removed. This tool-only package lists two blades but no battery, charger or bag.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

When is orbital action appropriate on FX2271?

The manual provides straight and orbital modes, but specifically says not to use orbital action when cutting metal. It recommends changing the selector only after the motor stops and removing the battery first. A required orbital control is documented, but its material restriction still matters.

What does the FX2271 sliding shoe do?

The manual says the pivoting shoe slides to one of three positions to adjust effective stroke length, and it must remain installed during operation. FLEX does not say the shoe changes a universal maximum cut depth; maintain blade projection and firm work contact.

Does the bare tool include a 24V battery or charger?

No. The exact FX2271-Z listing is tool-only and names the saw and two blades. The separate -1C kit lists a 5.0Ah FLEX 24V battery, charger and bag; these items are not in the -Z listing.

FLEX 24V brushless reciprocating saw · FX2271-Z tool-only package

The FX2271-Z is FLEX’s larger 24V brushless reciprocating saw in a tool-only configuration. Its one-and-a-quarter-inch stroke, 0–3,000 SPM range, selectable orbital/straight action, pivoting and three-position sliding shoe, tool-free blade clamp and LED make it a more configurable demolition saw than the compact-bodied FX2241. The exact page lists 7.4 lb without battery. It also lists two blades, but not a battery, charger or bag.

Longer stroke, speed control and an orbital selector

The model-matched FX2271 manual specifies a 1-1/4-inch (32mm) stroke and 0–3,000 strokes per minute. FLEX’s standalone product page repeats those figures and identifies the tool weight as 7.4 lb without a battery. The manual describes variable trigger speed and a lock-off button. That combination gives the operator a speed control and an additional selectable motion, but no published figure here proves a specific cutting-rate advantage on any material.

The selector switches between straight reciprocation and orbital action. FLEX recommends straight action for smoother cuts and orbital action for faster cuts, but the manual explicitly says not to use orbital action when cutting metal. It also requires the motor to stop completely before moving the selector and instructs the operator to lock the tool off and remove the battery before adjustments. Treat this as a material-specific control, not an always-on performance upgrade.

The shoe both pivots and slides to one of three indexed positions. The manual says the positions change effective stroke length for control and blade life; it also warns never to operate without the shoe installed. A blade must extend beyond the shoe and work through the whole stroke to reduce the risk of blade contact, breakage or damage. The shoe’s movement is a setup aid, not a promise of additional capacity independent of blade choice and support.

Blade changes and documented capacities

The keyless clamp uses a sleeve to retain and eject the blade. FLEX instructs the user to remove the battery before blade work, insert the blade fully and tug to verify retention. The manual lists 11-13/16 inches in wood, 1 inch in aluminum and 5-29/32 inches in metal pipe. These specifications are not interchangeable with each other; they do not establish a single maximum thickness across all materials. Secure the work and follow the manual’s blade selection and projection instructions.

An LED illuminates the cutting area, and a saw hook appears in the manual’s component list. FLEX also advertises vibration suppression. Those facts support understanding the controls and package, but not a claim of tested low vibration, better user comfort or measured runtime. The brushless motor is manufacturer-identified; no independent performance comparison is claimed.

Exact -Z contents and a weight caveat

The U.S. page’s available configurations name FX2271-Z as the tool-only model. Its Includes list is one reciprocating saw, a 9-inch (229mm) 6-TPI nail-embedded wood demolition blade and a 6-inch (155mm) 8/11-TPI thick-metal demolition blade. The separate FX2271-1C kit adds a 5.0Ah battery, 160W charger and FLEX bag; the -Z listing does not name those components. The exact page’s -1C blade listing calls its second blade 6 inches (152mm), unlike the -Z page’s 155mm parenthetical. This small published unit mismatch is preserved rather than silently harmonized.

The 7.4 lb weight is explicitly without battery, not the mass of a battery-ready saw or the saw-plus-accessory package. FLEX 24V compatibility lets an existing owner supply the pack and charger, but this -Z package does not. Verify the exact suffix and accessory list, especially if a bag or battery is required.

Where this model fits

For an existing FLEX 24V owner, the FX2271-Z makes sense when a full-size two-handed saw, longer stroke, selectable orbital mode, sliding shoe positions and two listed blades matter more than obtaining a battery and charger in the same box. The orbital selector’s metal restriction and the 7.4 lb bare-tool weight are real tradeoffs. If a battery-ready package is important, evaluate FX2271-1C separately: it retains the saw body but changes contents. The compact FX2241 has a different body, shorter stroke, smaller tool-only weight and no documented orbital selector; its one-handed branding is also qualified by its manual’s two-hand warning.

This is manufacturer-source desk research, not a physical test. The exact FX2271 U.S. page and manual support the package and operating details. Disconnect power before service, respect the material-specific orbital instruction and use the saw only with its pivoting shoe in place.
